The Remarkable Oyster Program

Discover the amazing filtering ability of this important mollusk and its effects on Chesapeake Bay water quality. Participants will learn about the life cycle of an oyster and the process of restoring the oyster population that many restoration organizations are currently engaged in. Participants will also explore the importance of oyster reefs so vital to the Bay’s biodiversity by learning different reef structures and configurations and the success of these artificial habitats.

Overnight and Extended-Day Programs

Overnights and Extended Days are a special adventure for everyone! One to three day programs are developed collaboratively with school leaders, assuring that educational standards and objectives are integrated into program design. The nature preserve supports a variety of forested, field and wetland habitats along Johnson and Tantrough Branch. Hiking trails, boardwalks and teaching stations provide unique education opportunities discovering the natural wonders of Southern Delaware.

Stewards of the Land Program

This third grade program has students discover the habitats and special adaptations of plants and animals found in Howard County. They will get down and dirty in our Children's Garden creating habitat for plants and insects native to this area. Students will also meet the Conservancy's resident owl, learning about specialized adaptations, hunting techniques and the threats that face owls in the wild.
