School Plantings

A school tree planting is a great way to engage young people in their local environment and achieve scholastic goals. We can help you introduce students to the field of urban forestry and add much-needed trees to schoolyards. Successful applicants work with our Education Coordinator to help select tree species and planting location on the school campus and to develop a maintenance schedule. We provide support leading up to and on the day of the planting and all the required tools and trees. Any public, private or charter school in D.C. can apply. Leading up to the event, schools have the option of participating in a Casey Trees-led Tree Rally. Tree Rallies introduce students to the species of trees they will be planting, shows them how to properly handle and plant the trees and promotes discussion on the value of trees. During the event, students serve as the primary planters giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility for the project. The school receiving the trees commits to watering them for a minimum of two years following their planting.

Restoring Our Own Trees Through Service

Our Restoring Our Own Trees Through Service (ROOTS) program is our primary education initiative. This program adheres to D.C. science standards for education and is used to connect K- 8 grade educators and students to their schoolyard environment by creating an outdoor classroom without leaving the school. Our ROOTS curriculum combines science, art, math and literature with fun, hands-on environmental education.

RiverSmart Schools Program

The RiverSmart schools program is a collaborative effort between the Anacostia Watershed Society and the District Department of the Environment (DDOE). This schoolyard greening program focuses on both creating green space on school grounds while also connecting teachers and students to that green space, and the Anacostia Watershed as a whole.

Wetland Youth Leadership Program

Through this day-long workshop students will not only be trained in wetland ecology, but equipped with leadership tools that will help them to make a difference in their environment and community. This program is ideal for Service Learning and Ecology Clubs, or any high school students with an interest in nature and their community. This is a fun, hands-on way for students to explore wetlands and build their confidence as a youth leader.

Introduction to Environmental Education

(7th grade – college) Maximum Group Size: 30 Cost: $3 per student Trip Length: 1.5 hours Seasons: Fall & Spring Learn how to make science come alive through an outdoor field trip. Discuss how to effectively use the resources of a nature center, how to prepare yourself and your students for a field trip, as well as experience an outdoor walk involving hands-on, environmental games and activities. Emerging Scientist Project

The Emerging Scientist Project (ESP) connects high school classrooms with local NOAA resources to expose students to oceanic and atmospheric research in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The program encourages students to pursue scientific careers and challenges them to seek local solutions to problems facing the Bay. ESP has been used by biology, environmental science, and other science teachers to assist in teaching standards and concepts while actively engaging their students in local environmental issues.This flexible program is designed to be carried out over the course of one semester during normally scheduled classes.

River Eco Canoe Adventure

This seven-mile canoe trip near beautiful, and historic Harpers Ferry WV will study the health of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, major tributaries on the watershed system for the Chesapeake Bay. Experiments will include: Macro-invertebrate study - The collection of bugs, such as may, cadis, and stone flies, at the bottom of the river food chain. Water tests - for phosphate and nitrogen levels. Riverside search for frogs, salamanders, and other river reptilian dwellers.
